Sitting by the pond on a winter's day

Before I returned home from my grocery store run, I stopped by the largest of our three lakes to see if my geese had flown south, or were still around.

We have lots of ice today, but no ducks, no geese.  One bird flew down to say hello.

The path was clear and my little green bench was dry and waiting for me to sit and relax. Bundled up, I was not too cold.  What a gift to sit alone and ponder the changes nature has made to this water in just a few days. The leaves I had so enjoyed in the Fall have blown away.  One of the things I do like about living away from California is that the seasons really do change.  There is no mistake today.  Our little reprieve is over. Winter is upon us.

The only sign of wild life I noticed today was these tracks in the ice as I was heading back to my car. I wonder what kind of creature made them?

It only matters to me that I am warm inside, Bill is sleeping and that is what he needs right now.  And I am smiling at having gotten a little time alone at my pond.  The solitude in the cold, with not a sole in sight, was heaven.   Just what my spirit needed.  I gave myself a bear hug on my way back to the car. It's cold out there!

  1. '"California Dreamin'" is a popular song by The Mamas & the Papas, first released in 1965. The song is #89 in Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.[1] The lyrics of the song are about a man in a cold winter landscape longing for the warmth of California.(Wikipaedia)

I was in college in 1965 and soon to be headed to the cold climate of North Carolina!

  2. One of my favorite songs though I didn't know anything about CA at the time just liked the beat. I think we're going to get some winter starting Wed. No snow in Mt. Shasta. Glad not to have the amt we had to deal with last year but would like some. Glad you had some special nature time to yourself. ummmm wish I had one of the boys old scout books. I think there was a section on tracks made by animals. Jan

  3. And yet, that is where we met Jan! Funny. You from the East, me from the West...

  4. Loved this! Your wimpy friend, however, just gazed out the back door at HER pond and thought it was very pretty in the snow. But did not venture forth!

  5. Well, you have been ill. Better stay in where it is warm. And you run around enough! 5 mile walks is not wimpy!

  6. 'California Dreaming' is one of my all time favourite songs. Having said that, I think I'd prefer to live in a land where there are four definite seasons. It was, of course, always that way here until 'global warming' kicked in. Now, on the whole (though there are exceptions some years) our seasons are a slight variation on mild, wet and grey with high winds in winter. Your part of the world looks lovely, Ginger.

    1. Today it is 0 and there is ice INSIDE the window. A day to stay in until it reaches high of 17. The blue sky and melting snow call me out there. One January I flew to see my family in CA in -9 and seriously considered staying there. It was 70 when I landed. Yet here I am being called outside to enjoy it. I have been in your country only once and it was so beautiful...but as you say, April was grey, and drizzly. No serious rain however. Daffodil's blooming all around York. What a sight that was!

    1. That is funny! This morning all I wanted to do was sit inside in 6 degree weather and drink my cup of coffee. But my birdie kept calling to me. I had to go to the patio, open it, and off he ran...playing hide and seek. I am glad that we have mutual bird pals! I can't resist their songs.

  8. Wow, was just looking over this post and remembering all the different music Aunt Gerri could pound out on that piano, The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, songs from the Beetles, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Elvis, most likely some from The Mamas & the Papas. What a true gift, I remember her being able to hear a song and just play it. She, along with your Mom and mine left this earth too soon.

  9. Great memory Norma. Thank you for sharing it. I tried so hard to play the piano and I just don't have the ear. I just found out Aunt Gerri and Bill have the same birthday! Miss them all. HUG
